Review of Winter's Bone (2010) by Geoffrey T — 11 Apr 2012
Winter's Bone is well acted and certainly well directed. There's some really disturbing images here: cold desolate landscapes, a land forgotten and torn apart, etc. But where's the drive? If I watch a movie and am bewildered why someone would make it in the first place, that's not a very good sign.
It takes a very long time to get going and I'm convinced there isn't much of a story at all. Out of the 90 minute running time, only about 20 minutes is actually important and/or riveting stuff.
It lacks a purpose, and strings seemingly endless scenes of no consequence together. There's little story, and no real character drama that I could perceive. I guess I'd say it's worth seeing for the good parts of it, but in general, it's nothing to get excited about.
