Review of Winter's Bone (2010) by Matthew D — 06 Jul 2018
A haunting thriller.
Director Debra Granik recreates rural Missouri in an impoverished neighborhood riddled with meth addiction. Winter's Bone is a chilling look into one of America's poorest communities. We see how lawless these areas can be realistically. Winter's Bone will keep your attention and keep you in suspense throughout its short run time.
Jennifer Lawrence gives her best acting performance to date as Ree Dolly in Winter's Bone. She is a strong young lady that must deal with insurmountable odds with little help. I found Lawrence engaging and emotional. She emoted so well for such a young actress. Similarly, John Hawkes gives a harsh, yet emotive portrayal of Lawrence's uncle Teardrop. Hawkes is terrifying as Teardrop, then relatable on a profound level. I love both lead roles in Winter's Bone.
Furthermore, I must mention Dale Dickey as Merab. She is wicked and threatening with many subtle movements and aspects to her performance. I found her character so easy to hate, but Dickey plays her perfectly.
In short, Debra Granik directed an indie drama masterpiece. The suspense is palpable. You will be on the edge of your seat throughout Winter's Bone.
