Review of Winter's Bone (2010) by Stephen E — 29 Nov 2011
Winter's Bone inspires me. It is not an inspirational film, but it is such a great film that is so utterly simple that I am inspired to become a filmmaker even more so because of it. It doesn't rely on any chase sequences or special effects or anything "big budget", but on the performances of its actors.
The atmosphere is despairing and bleak and the land is cold and the trees are withered. The people that inhabit the land are the same way. It's a horrific world; a place that most people don't know exist or do and don't pay much attention to it.
Films like Winter's Bone are the upper echelon of cinema. Why? Because you can tell that the creators care and put a lot of heart into it. They don't do it so much for the money as they do to spread the message; the message that this happens and is happening.
