Review of Winter's Bone (2010) by Ren M — 17 Jan 2012
I swear "Dueling Banjos" played through my head the whole time I watched this movie. Jennifer Lawrence plays a 17 year old girl with a younger brother and sister, a mother who is not all there, and a missing father who is wanted by a bounty hunter for skipping his court date. To make matters worse, the father had put up the house as collateral for the bail and now Jennifer must find him alive or dead before they are evicted AND take care of her younger siblings and mother to boot. Set deep in the Ozark Mountains (this movie made me think twice about ever wanting to drive through those parts without an armed escort), Winter's Bone portrays these mountain people, their system of justice and how they cope or don't cope with the modern world.
Kudos to: Jennifer Lawrence (Acting) and Debra Granik and Anne Rosellini (Screenwriting).
