Review of Winter's Bone (2010) by Micheal M — 07 Feb 2012
Jennifer Lawrence is a rising young force in film. I look for her to become a prominent female lead in the not to far future. Her performance in this film was brilliant (without being melodramatic) as a teenage girl caught up in the tragedy and dysfunction of a generational drug culture.
John Hawkes was mesmerizing as well, emanating a smoldering menace that leapt off the screen, making me nervous as I watched. An atmosphere of potential violence and fear was communicated throughout the film, leaving me drained, disturbed and wholly entertained at the end.
