Review of Winter's Bone (2010) by Joey K — 26 Mar 2012
The film should have been entitled Winter's Bore. Slow pacing and a dreary tone make the film crawl along to little effect. The story isn't all that compelling and the characters are even less so.
Jennifer Lawrence's talented performance and a few nice shots of the children playing (that works like a documentary of their youthful hopefulness) stand alone as the film's two saving graces; they earn Winter's Bone 2 stars in my book.
Other than Ree and her younger brother & sister, there aren't any likable characters to be found here. This film should've been a compelling drama about a young, brave woman (Ree) willing to rebel against the rules of the land to defend her family.
Instead, Winter's Bone fractures and fails.
