Although Winter's Bone boasts strong performances and a nicely wrought atmosphere of gloominess, the movie just has too little to say. Its comments on the complexity of family (specifically patriarchal) dynamics are interesting but are not explored enough.
The movie takes a long time to say anything and ends up boring the watcher in parts.
