Review of Winter Light (1963) by Devin R — 04 Aug 2009
Depending on your perspective on religion, Ingmar Bergman's deeply somber chamber drama, WINTER LIGHT, can be seen as either faith-affirming and ultimately uplifting or tremendously depressing. The film centers around a Pastor struggling with his faith in the presence of "God's silence".
It's bleak B&W cinematography only heightens the chilly internal conflict stirring inside Gunnar Bjornstrand's performance as the Priest, and Ingrid Thulin's raw and touching performance is heartbreaking.
Bergman makes delicate use of every one of the film's 81 minutes, and the ending will certainly provoke endless discussion. Regardless of one's interpretation of it's conclusion, it's hard to argue against the film's status as an artistic achievement.
I'd highly recommend checking out WINTER LIGHT.
