Review of Winter Light (1963) by Tejal J — 13 Aug 2009
Bergman's Nattvardsgasterna aka Winter Light forms the second part of his faith trilogy after "Through a glass, darkly", exposing the facade established by priests of undue faith in God and religion.
Tormented by God's Silence, a theme formerly provoked in his "The Seventh Seal" a pastor is unable to effectively deliver his daily sermons though his doubts remain masked to the common people.
The oastor's questions also show his growing instability when he patronizes the woman always at his side as he realizes and somehow dislikes his growing need for her, giving a fair insight into his selfish nature.
