Review of Winter Light (1963) by Gustavo H — 24 Aug 2010
Simple by design... heavy by concept. I haven't see all of Bergman's films, but this one might be my favorite so far, though its not exactly light fare, quite the contrary... its pretty damned depressing.
.. melancholy aside, its quite compelling in its execution [when Tomas is reading Märta's letter to him, the audience is shown a medium close up of Märta reciting the letter. This takes between 5-10 minutes, but Ingrid Thulin's performance is quite real and heartfelt that I was still sucked in, even though nothing was happening on the screen].
Great film... just don't watch it if you are feeling down... its not really going to help cheer you up...
