Review of Winter Kills (1979) by Michael T — 29 May 2008
Richard Condon's subversive idea in his classic novel (The Manchurian Candidate) was "what if Joseph McCarthy was actually a tool of the Reds." The subversive idea in his novel Winter Kills was "what if Joseph Kennedy engineered his own son's death.".
The movie WINTER KILLS is a seldom seen thriller that adapts the Condon novel but adds in a bizare sense of humour, and a post-Watergate sense of political paranoia to the mix. Its worth watching for the cast with standout performances by Jeff Bridges and John Huston.
If you can pick up the DVD Anchor Bay released of this film a few years back you can also see the "Who Killed the WINTER KILLS" feature about how the film got made and practically shelved. William Richert discribes how Richard Boone delayed getting onboard a tanker to film a scene until he got a call from his banker that the cheque Richert had given him had cleared...
