Review of Wings of Desire (1987) by Samuel B — 02 Dec 2009
This film is, quite simply, unlike any other I've ever seen. The plot itself; an angel that hovers over Berlin and falls in love with a human he watches; is not particularly unprecedented or complex.
But in execution, Wings of Desire is a triumphant masterpiece. As Bruno Ganz' wonderfully alienated angel watches over Berlin and listens to the anguished pains of mortals, the viewer is swept up into another world, a haunting dream state that transfixes and mesmerizes.
The Fellini-esque scenes of the trapeze artist the angel falls for are magical, and the scenes with Peter Falk (aka Columbo) are amusing and oddly moving. The beautiful B&W cinematography at times erupts into color, yet another nice touch added to a singular film, by the masterful Wim Wenders at his best.
