Review of Wing Commander (1999) by Allan C — 24 May 2013
I never played the video game, so I can't say how this film compares, but it's a pretty forgettable space saga that has more in common with a WWII submarine movie or Top Gun than it does "Star Wars" or others sci-fi space battle films.
The casting of bland hunks Freddie Prinze Jr. and Matthew Lillard is pretty indicative of the banality of this film. The film does get one check for casting Jürgen Prochnow as a ship commander, recalling his unforgettable role as a German U-boat captain in "Das Boot.
" Not terrible, but awfully forgettable.
