Review of Wind River (2017) by Jluis_001 — 07 Sep 2017
One of the best surprises of 2017.

It is daring when a good screenwriter goes into the arena of directing but rarely the results are good.
I had my expectations on Wind River, but let's say they pointed out to something else but I'm happy it turned out to be a really good experience, and if there is something that Tylor Sheridan achieved with his debut, is that he is gave it a good identity.
Wind River is a film that involves the mystery of a murder in an Native American reservation, the first minutes give you clues but they do not seem to announce that path, however when the darkness seizes, it makes it to stay and it forces you as an spectator to seek for answers.
The film has a more direct narrative than what we saw in his scripts for Sicario and Hell or Highwater, however despite the slowness of the rhythm at the beginning, the story never gets stucked and allows you to know a little more of the general background of the situation.
The work of its protagonists is solid, but Jeremy Renner shows better credentials than Elizabeth Olsen who practically battles throughout the film and never gives the impression of being an FBI agent, I do not know if to blame her or the script, but there is a certain argumentative weakness in her character.
Beyond that, Sheridan manages to impose a nice style, though let's say that he does not take risks, but it's comprehensible, after all is his first film as filmmaker.
The only thing I really dislike is that the film does not provide any surprises, you go from one point to another without any change and eventually you know where you're going, let's say Sheridan sacrifices the mystery in order to create a more frontal movie, not that it is something necessarily bad, but it does weakens the movie in the final part, because while it delivers resolutions, these inevitably feel somewhat empty.
But what more can I say? I totally recommend it, if you like stories like this, you will definitively enjoy it, but even so if not the case, for any movie lover this one is a very good option.
