Review of Winchester (2018) by Kevin%20 L — 02 Feb 2018
Pretty much what I expected...pretty damn terrible. Loosely based on the story of the WInchester Mansion where Sarah Winchester (Helen Mirren) with her vast fortune moved to San Jose, California where she kept expanding the mansion she lived in.
Construction crews worked day and night since Sarah claimed the ghosts of the people who died from the Winchester rifles would give her plans to build rooms where they were murdered. Sarah uses this to come with terms with the spirits and guides them to the afterlife.
For the more violent spirits she has them locked in the rooms with 13 nails. Anywho, with the Winchester board thinking Sarah is absolutely nuts they hire Dr. Eric Price (Jason Clarke) to do an evaluation of Sarah's mind and body.
If Sarah is nuts then they can get the rest of the company from her ending this entire charade. They hire Eric believing he'll give them the favorable outcome they want. Eric himself doesn't believe in ghosts and thinks its all a trick of the mind.
On top of all this Eric himself is going through a pretty bad event which has lead him to abuse medicine...so yeah. Eric soon finds out there's much more to the Winchester house then he first believes.
The movie is pretty bare bones. Mirren is just portraying a pretty crazy person and some of her dialogue is just cringe worthy. The house is often showed CG'd in and at times it looks absolutely horrible.
I will say the jump scares are actually decent here (I jumped a couple times) and Clarke is the best actor in this movie giving you someone you almost care about. The films super predictable, not that scary and has a very poor story.
I would avoid this one and wait to Redbox it if you really really want to see it...anyone else skip!
