Review of Wimbledon (2004) by Tyler M — 21 Dec 2007
It might be a winner!
A good romantic comedy full of charm, wit, and style.
The Story: Peter Colt is a washed up professional tennis player competing in the most prestigious competition in the world, Wimbledon. Lizzie Bradbury is an up and coming professional player competing in the same tournament. She's got her eyes on the prize, he's got his eyes on her, and her father has his eyes on him. It's a simple romantic comedy about tennis...Yes, you read that right, it's about tennis...But it's actually interesting here...It moves along at a swift pace, has a great sense of humor, the camera work is superb, and as I mentioned before, it's nice and stylish.
The Cast: Kirsten Dunst, Paul Bettany, Sam Neill...Paul Bettany is Peter Colt, his hopes aren't extremely high and his confidence has been shattered by a long losing streak. His performance is great, and his character charming as always. Kristen Dunst is Lizzie Bradbury, the straight forward sporty girl that steals our leading mans heart. She's great here, convincing, believable, overall perfect for the part and oh so pretty. Sam Neill is Dennis Bradbury, Lizzie's father. As with Lizzie he has his eyes on both the prize and the guys, a little protective of his daughter wanting what he thinks is best for her, although sometimes it seems like what might be best for him. He's good here, he doesn't have a lot of screen time here, but the bit that he does have, is well acted and well written. All charming characters that establish some sort of connection with the viewer.
One to Five Scale: 4.
There's nothing left to say, stylish, funny, and chalk full of charm. It's a romantic comedy that while not necessarily avoiding cliches, manages to make them less noticeable and more tolerable.
