Review of Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory (1971) by Josh G — 29 Dec 2012
Whimsical, surreal, sometimes frightening, but always magical. Gene Wilder does not play Willy Wonka, he IS Willy Wonka. His performance hits all the right notes. He wields a diabolical demeanor that just screams "I'm in control!" He's clearly a mastermind.
His flip out in the tunnel is a disturbing acid trip that I still to this day cannot understand. As scary as all of this sounds, WIlder's wonderful performance touches the hearts of children and adults alike with warmth and kindness.
Throw in a handful of catchy, now-household tunes, what you get is a purely magical film that will resound with each successive generation.
