Review of Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow? (2013) by Mandy C — 27 Dec 2014
This is a very entertaining little Taiwanese film. It examines the universal themes of the search for love and happiness. The story is engaging. We principally follow 4 characters as they struggle and search with greater or lesser success. There are no bad guys here. Everyone is trying to do the right thing; as they understand it. The movie tone is lightened by some flourishes of fantasy. There are also a few comedic touches. The American Chinese director, Arvin Chen, does a very good job. He manages to balance all of the disparate parts very well.
All of the main actors are very good. The actors are mostly Taiwanese pop singers or actors. Naturally, they are all fairly attractive people. They always are.
Our main character is a married gay man with a wife and young son. In Asia, there is tremendous social pressure on gay men to marry and produce an heir. They may come out to their friends and co-workers; but often not to their parents. His wife is probably the most sympathetic character. But, there is hope for her too. Luckily, she is very beautiful, even in her plain company uniform. Our hero has a waffling sister who can't decide whom, or if, to marry. And, our fourth principal character, is a poor, inept guy who loves the sister. This sad sack does not know what to do. There is a small band of gay guys who attempt to aid some of the principals in their struggles. This is usually done with a comedic touch.
Like real life, not everything is neatly resolved in the end. But, the trip to there is very entertaining ... and tender even. And, like real life, there is some anguish here and there. The mood is evened out by the humor. It's a well made movie.
It was a very good trip to the flics.
