Review of Wild Tales (2014) by Richard E — 30 May 2015
Even the chilling similarity between the denouement of the first tale and the recent tragic events in the Alps couldn't detract from the wonderful blend of comedy and horror of someone gaining revenge on their parents by flying an aeroplane straight down at them from the sky, like a bolt from heaven.
There is wonderful variety in these stories. Some grow from tiny beginnings and grow out of all proportion - a driver blocked on the road, a bride jealous of an old flame - while some start with a bang like the young hit and run driver confessing to his parent - but they all follow an inexorable and terrible inner logic which draws you in.
This mostly leads to tragedy, but not always, so that the film is satisfyingly free of moralising - it just portrays human emotion at its rawest and most telling.
