Review of Wild Style (1982) by Phil B — 09 Nov 2007
If you've got a soft spot for early eighties hip-hop, breakdancing or smart graffiti, you're likely to find something to like about this one. The film is filled with music that's very much of the time, and a lot of it still sounds good even now.
So, if you've an interest in this kind of stuff - go for it, you'll probably like it. On the other hand, if you're thinking that you can probably tolerate a little outdated hip-hop, a bit of breakdancing and what not providing the film has a great plot and moves you emotionally, then you might do well to pass this one by.
The plot is simplistic and the acting is nothing to write home about. It's about the music and it's surrounding culture, this one. If you don't already like this stuff, you might by the end, though.
And if modern rap music normally sends you to Snoozeville, this film might leave you a little more impressed, with it's classic soundtrack from when hip hop was the birth of something fresh and new, and with it's focus off the semi-naked chicks and on the music where it ought to be!
