Review of Wild Strawberries (2012) by Grant P — 12 Dec 2007
Bergman strikes again. I particularly liked his approach to representing childhood, how it manifests itself in dreams and reality later in life. There's a definable circular motion to this film that is warming, riveting and revelatory, but it remains almost a casual fun to watch.
In fact, I'd say Smultronst¤llet is probably Bergman's most accessible film. It finds a balance between psychological exploration and the lightheartedness of human nature. Transitions in the film are masterfully done; characters are lively and interesting; and themes well-developed.
At this point, I am forced to say that Bergman is Sweden's finest director in history, creating some of the most original, consistent, and mesmerizing films I've ever seen. Watch this, please.
