Review of Wild Strawberries (2012) by Jeff H — 10 May 2008
I used to think that Ingmar Bergman didn't have a sense of humour, until I revisited Wild Strawberries. It's not a comedy, sure, and Bergman was never a comedian, but funny and touching scenes abound in this Swedish road movie about an emotionally repressed 78-year old professor who, in the course of a day (my birthday, in fact - June 2!), re-engages with his past, the people around him, and most importantly, life.
There's sadness and surrealism too - the wonderful dream sequences are like Salvador Dali meets Franz Kafka - in this profoundly rewarding masterpiece.
