Review of Wild Strawberries (2012) by Chris M — 20 Mar 2009
This is my first 'go' at Bergman, and during the opening moments I was fearing the worst. But it became gradually more compelling...
The interwoven dream sequences are wonderfully done, as Professor Isak explores and re-examines his life. Filled with moments of loneliness and isolation (good bleak Swedish stuff!), it's also ultimately redemptive. The final scene of Isak overlooking his young newly-wed parents is gently calming after the self-examinations that have gone before.
Not easy, requires concentration and an open mind, but rewards your attention.
