Review of Wild Strawberries (2012) by Uditha D — 05 Jan 2013
Wild Strawberries, upto now, is the simplest foreign film I have ever watched. That all its profundity - without all the deep stuff that accompanied this film with Ingmar Bergman's other classic "The Seventh Seal" is the simplest thing one can siphon off this gemstone.
The story, points of which have been parodied throughout cinema history (not least of which the first dream of the protagonist of the film, Dr Bjorg), is also a fundamental testament to its purity. But purity in a film, to me, comes from depth, and this film certainly HAS depth: only thing, it ensnares and tricks the viewer into believing that it's only a simple film, not a treatise, on loneliness.
But with multiple viewings of this film, this misconception is easily broken - the psychoanalytic part of it is enough to convince anyone of that. Although, one must admit it, the language, particularly the protagonist's, was pretty convincing of its subtle simplicity to say the least.
