Remarkably for a self-proclaimed film fan I had never seen this film until I was given a 4 disc set of Bergman classics recently. A film that resonates with warmth and humanity, it reminded me of Virginia Woolf's MRS. DALLOWAY in that we are given an insight into someone's life during the course of a single day.

Isak Borg is a emotionally cold professor who is to be awarded an honour in a nearby town. He decides to drive there and his daughter-in-law who has recently appeared at his house to stay offers to drive with him.

The journey gives him the opportunity to revisit the old summer house that he used to visit as a teenager. This leads to a re-examination of his life and the effect he has had on those around him.

A film of memory, loss and redemption that reflects and refracts with the viewer to remarkable effect helped by the Bergman's vision, beautiful photography and the humanist performances of Victor Sjostrom,Ingrid Thulin, Bibi Andersson and Gunnar Bjornstrand.
