Review of Wicked Lake (2008) by Mike Z — 14 Jul 2008
So I picked this one in the Fantasia 2008 line-up mainly because Ministry did the soundtrack, and when I first saw the film's trailer (at the last Ministry show) I thought it looked pretty good. Then I saw the trailer again (maybe it was due to lack of beer and clearer vision) and it looked not as good as I remembered, actually it looked pretty damn bad! But I figured, ok, so how bad could it be? Being a fan of some bad films, I decided to see it.
....And it was pretty freakin' Horrible.
I'm not certain of what the director's vision was exactly, but this film wasn't just all over the place, it had no real focus. It reminded me a bit of Wes Craven's earliest entry, "Last House On The Left" (and that too wasn't exactly the greatest of all films either).
The acting was atrocious, and purposely over-acted at time, just for the sake of trying to be funny (which really didn't work). The plot made no sense, the actors don't really get introduced into the film, they simply get thrown into the film, and the gore was trying to be edgy but came out flat.
The dialogue is ridiculous, and even by amateur standards, this is almost as low-brow as it gets.
The gratuitous (and in my opinion, overdone) nudity in this film is pretty much the only thing that may keep you remotely interested (if you're a guy who likes his movies on the fleshy side).
It was fun to see a brief cameo by Ministry frontman, Al Jourgensen early on in the film (as an art teacher!), but that's where all the fun ends.
A direct to DVD release at best.
But I say, Avoid!
