Review of Why Did I Get Married? (2007) by John D — 20 Jun 2010
Why Did I Get Married is a film that has a lot that's good but feels uncompleted and rushed.
I'll be the first to admit I'm not a Tyler Perry fan. (Yes I'm aware that the white 16 year old kid isn't exactly his target audience.) but this is easily his best flick (I also know that doesn't say much but keep reading.) Just sadly the good doesn't make up for the problems of Why Did I Get Married.
The problems are that Perry doesn't spend enough time establishing of the characters which is a shame because there are some strong work trying to get out of this film. We have some characters who are flawed but you know that there trying to help and the best performances of the film from Jill Scott and Malik Yoba (Ice on Arrested Development.) is helped because there will written characters. Then you have characters that are nothing more then black stereotypes and you get horrible performances because if it. As for the story it's a great concept not taken to it's full advantage.
Perry is getting better and I think it's great that we now have black filmmakers making mainstream films that try to get away from certain ideas and I'm sure once Perry gets the loose screws fixed with his writing, he'll be someone to watch. Just Why Did I Get Married won't be the film to do that.
