Review of Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (1966) by Kevin C — 25 Jun 2013
Fantastic dialogue and brutal performances, Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? is a powerful film. Taylor and Burton tearing away at each other through their "fun and games" is mesmerizing, unpleasant, and shocking.
Nichols' camera captures close-ups, zooms, and lighting in a fly-on-the-wall manner that made me feel very uneasy watching the couple rip at each other. Segal and Dennis are sufficient (it's interesting that Dennis even won an Oscar for her very mediocre portrayal of Honey), but most anyone would seem that way when acting next to Taylor and Burton in this film.
An amazing filmmaking debut for Nichols.
