Review of Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (1966) by Perry M — 14 Jan 2014
I was too young to appreciate this film when it came out in the 60's but I have to say, after watching it, I didn't miss much. For me, this film has not stood the test of time. Of the four actors nominated for Oscars in this movie (Elizabeth Taylor and Sandy Dennis won Actress and Supporting Actress respectively) I felt that only Richard Burton was worthy of the nod.
The remaining three cast members swayed between overacting and just plain bad acting. That this movie was nominated for 13 Oscars is a complete mystery to me. Best Costume Design? Really? Sorry, but this movie doesn't qualify as a classic in my book.
I gave it two stars only because the early part of the movie is very witty and well-written. The sarcastic banter between George and Martha during this part of the film was quite entertaining. Other than that, by the end of the movie, I was left wondering what the point of it all was.
