Review of Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (1966) by Anthony K — 16 Nov 2011
Wow, intense! This was a radically neurotic movie made all the more by the black & white shades it was shot in. I hated it but had to watch it. It was as depressing as a hangover with a story line the epitome of manic.
I almost felt physically sick watching it. When one moment you decide upon who the villain is, the whole story flips & you see the characters in a different light. Each role is portrayed as flawed at one point or another.
In the end, it unravels into a fantasy based world where the truth is made up on the spur of the moment to satisfy a whim, usually a bitter vengeful one. Ultimately the seed of the neurosis is unearthed to the viewer & guests & you realise that these monsters of Taylor & Burton are really victims of a quite human tragedy & in fact are quite frail people.
I could never watch this again but have to give credit to the amazing dialog.
