Review of Who Is Cletis Tout? (2001) by Tom J — 08 Feb 2008
A movie in which people celebrate great movies does not necessarily mean the movie itself is going to be good. It is pretty enjoyable fluff, but it tries to be too hip and clever for its own good. Christian Slater plays a crook who breaks out of prison, assumes the identify of someone (Cletis Tout) who happens to be a photographer who snapped images of a mob son killing a prostitute.
He is captured by a hitman, Critical Mike (Tim Allen) who loves old movies. "Cletis" tells his tale of breaking out of jail and then needing to break back in another jail to dig up diamonds buried there which enthralls the hitman.
Apparently Critical Mike is not all that critical. The story is fairly pedestrian and features things that people only do in movies such as communicate through carrier pigeons and speak in movie lines.
Not a bad movie, but not as hip as it thinks it is.
