Review of Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988) by Anthony B — 30 Jan 2012
Who knew that film noir and cartoon comedy would mix so well? Revolutionary at the time for its mixture of cartoons a and live action, this movie has more than special effects at it's heart. It's a funny, heartwarming story about an alcoholic gumshoe detective who puts himself back together to save "Toontown", a mystical land in LA where cartoon characters roam free.
The Humphrey Bogart-like detective is perfectly inhabited by, believe it or not, a British guy with a cockney accent which never shows up in the movie. It's one of the most surprising star turns I've ever seen.
But even he is outdone by Roger Rabbit, a hilarious mixture of Bugs Bunny's looks and Goofy's brains, whose plight (he was framed for a murder) forms the film's true heart.
