Review of White Oleander (2002) by Kalandra . — 19 Mar 2008
This was one of Michelle Pfeiffer's best. She plays a rather disturbed and heartbroken artist. She has a teenage daughter that adores her yet resents her. This poor girl is so confused because she wants to be faithful to her mother yet she wants to figure out things for herself.
Her mother kills her lover and is sent to prison. The girl is devastated but still remains loyal to her mom. As the years go by she goes from foster home to foster home and starts seeing her mother differently.
She feels as though her mother is still affecting her life even though she's in prison. In the end she wants her mother to let her go as some sort of sign that she's not selfish to show that she really loves her.
In the end her mom does the right thing. This movie is just a basic movie about what life can hand you and how you choose to deal with it. You can let it beat you or you can beat it. Great film! Very inspiring and thought provoking!
