Review of White Oleander (2002) by Shireen H — 18 Dec 2012
Great acting by Michelle Pfeiffer, good acting by Alison. I LOVE the book, which is why I had to see the movie. It was pretty good, compelling. There were a few things left out that would have shown the closure Astrid gets.
At the end she meets her father, a huge point because she is able to start filling that void in her life. She makes the decision to stay with her bf and away from her mother, which is best for her. She is no longer living in her shadow or filled with regret and fear.
I feel the movie failed to show this. They left her seeming weak and attached still. Also, my favourite lines in the book are the mother's quote about loneliness. "Loneliness is the human condition, cultivate it.
.." They should have put the whole quote in the movie. Anyway it was nice to see the book brought to life.
