Review of White Material (2010) by John H — 12 Jul 2010
Articulating problems of colonialism, perceptions and experiences of Africa, the places that constitute it themselves, the essence of warfare, the dialectical qualities of violence, the meaning of heroes, woman and her strengths, man and his weaknesses, the folly of both - White Material does all of this deftly, with story and image, in a way that analysis or explication in language couldn't possibly.
It seems contrary to the project to attempt to articulate these things trivially and less effectively in response. Fascinating, sometimes entertaining, moving and insinuating. Denis continues to conduct philosophy by film.
