Review of White Material (2010) by Jk F — 27 Jul 2010
I am unfortunately ignorant enough not to know whether this film is a complete fiction (albeit pretty obviously recognisable from reality) or based on a particular set of circumstances. Either way, it managed to engage thoroughly throughout.
Whether as allegory, commentary or simple narrative, the storytelling spun almost poetically - in a way vaguely reminiscent of Terrence Malick - from start to finish. The performances were superb & the cinematography absolutely mesmerising.
When necessary, the film felt savage, yet often juxtaposed these moments with warmth and beauty. Highly recommended.
