Review of White Material (2010) by Edward C — 15 Apr 2011
I think "White Material" is a struggle to get through because it slipped and accidentally internalized the struggle it wished only to portray. The film touches on some very solid points that really needed to be made-clearly.
Unfortunately, this movie gets so wrapped-up in becoming something, that it fails to cleanly release its goods to its audience. Call it a case of overly self-conscious, artistic aspiration if you wish (like anyone ever would!), but for me it felt like some seriously misplaced coyness.
In other words, a lot less nothing and a bunch more something would've gone a long way toward making this a better film.
