Review of White Heat (1949) by Ross B — 29 Jul 2010
"Your kind of Cagney on his kind of movie!".
One of the finest gangster movies ever made!(my 2nd favorite).
Hi everybody! This magnificent work of art is directed by Raoul Walsh(The Thief of Bagdad-1924) and starred by Cagney(Yankee Doodley Dandy-1942),Edmond O'Brien(The Wild Bunch-1969) and Virginia Mayo(The Best Years Of Our Lives-1946).
Ok,let's begin with the AFI:Why on earth this movie didn't made it to their top! it just sucks...
Unique Stuff:
-One of the most violent films ever made.(The most? du know).
-First(as far as I remember)really disturbing mother-son relationship.
-Best Raoul Walsh-directing-movie.
-Best Cagney movie.
-Best Cagney performance ever.
-First(as far...)movie showing hi-policial technology(Portable radar).
-First Psychopath(As far...)character(merciless and crazed).
The Oscar:WTF!Best movie of the year All The King's Men?,i mean it's a great movie but the favorites of the year were Bicycle Thieves,A Letter to Three Wives,The Third Man and White Heat!and WH was only nominated for Best Story.Cagney's performance really deserved the oscar as well.
And the ending! OMG not even Little Caesar's ending is THIS good!
ªDouble Spoiler!:I ain't saying that this movie has the best ending ever,i'm saying that it has the same ending than Little Caesar, only better!
ªThis movie also features my all time favorite movie quote ever:"Made it,Ma!Top of the World!".
RT Meter:100%.
Most Classic Scene:Ending.
Favorite Scene:Lunch Time+Ending(I like them both the same).
Another Famous Quote:You have a good memory for names...Too Good!(Bang Bang!).
Lenght:1:53:16(with opening credits).
Masterpiece Rank:Yes!
Underrated:Yes!
Not even Cagney's performance on Yankee Doodley Dandy(from which he won his one and only Oscar!)can be compared with this one!
