Review of White Heat (1949) by Matt W — 12 Feb 2012
One of the best gangster films I have seen. Also one of the better films based in LA I have seen. Jimmy Cagney is a legend and this was one of his better performances as Cody Jarrett. It was not as good as his turn as Tom Powers in Public Enemy but it was nearly as good.
The story with undercover cop trying to infiltrate Jarrett's gang was ahead of its time. Donnie Brasco and films like it owe big time to White Heat. The dynamics of the relationships between Cody and his wife and his mother were complexly superb.
Solid directing and a great ending to boot.
