Review of White Heat (1949) by Adrian B — 18 Aug 2010
An electrying piece of entertainment with Mr. Yankee Doodle Dandy himself in a completely cruel and psychotic role as compared to that other classic. A film which hardly loses edge from the first minute to the last minute and one that is so beautifully made that you want more by the end.
A train robbery, a prison break, a heist plan, and shootout in a oil refinery...what more can you want? Oh yaah! The fact that Cagney's character has serious frequent headaches. Never discussed, but because it caused him to go mad a number of times, I think his violent actions were the result of a malignant brain tumour that was hammered into his head organ.
If doctors did a procedure to check this, he may have been saved. However, no will ever know though. A beautifully designed film that emphasizes why the 1940's was a great decade for cinema. Easily a new favourite of mine.
