Review of White Fang (1991) by Dave W — 21 May 2009
Can't say much for its sequels as I will never dare watch them but the first of these films was a classic family film that can still capture the hearts of people new to it. White Fang stands the test of time and holds up well as a Disney classic.
The film is set in an at times visually spectacular setting where the scenery changes as the seasons do. I believe this was one of the first films that introduced me to Ethan Hawk and he quite young here.
The scenes where it looks as if animals are hurt (though monitored by the American Humane Society) look very convincing and you wonder how they were able to get the animals to perform on camera as they do.
Even Bart The Bear makes a grand appearance with a showdown of Dog and Bear scene that really showcases the enormity of Bart, and he is BIG I tells ya. There are great performaces here with James Remar (The Warriors) and KLaus Brandaur (The Russia House) taking up a majority of screen time.
White Fang is a classic that caters to your emotions with its scope of majestic locales and an uplifting supporting soundtrack. With a great story by beloved novelist Jack London you will not be dissapointed revisiting the great classic film.
