Review of White Dog (1982) by Leighton T — 11 May 2011
The so-called "lost film" of the great Samuel Fuller is a brutal and provocative postmodern fable about racism. The film concerns a young actress who finds a lost white German Shepherd that she discovers has been trained to attack black people.
The film follows her attempts to have the dog deprogrammed, and it becomes a compelling tale about how education and environment shape racist attitudes. The film suffers somewhat from a cheap-looking aesthetic and terrible acting--it often feels like a made-for-TV movie; therefore, its message can come off as contrived and hammy at times.
Still, it manages to manipulate its seemingly allegorical tale into a rather astute critique of how racists are made.
