Review of Whiskey Tango Foxtrot (2016) by Tim M — 17 Mar 2016
The understanding of which box were putting this movie in, is completely and delightfully unclear. It's not the typical SNL type comedy or "come with us to a war zone" story we're so often asked to easily swallow down, and it is nicely layered and complex in both story and characters.
It does fall short a bit too often throughout to really nail it as an utter success, although it is so vastly and wildly allowing of new boundaries, I'm left wondering if it's just us the audience not prepared to see what we're seeing. Get does a great job here and I'm ever so grateful to her for going for it. It's close, close enough to get excited, excited about roles for actual women outside the norm offered, excited for stories not told as of yet... Stories with humour integrated in the mundane.
