Review of Whiplash (2014) by Jennifer D — 08 Jun 2015
Fierce & gripping from the very beginning. The film follows an ambitious musical student and his equally instructive & destructive relationship with his conductor and mentor.
The film would be worth watching if only for its rich Jazz score, but there are so many layers of character development for the main players. The two leads in this film are completely engrossing. Miles Teller earned his Oscar nod but J. K Simmons could crush you with a look or flay you with his acerbic wit. The plot has moments of predictability but instead of making the movie dull, it adds to the layers of anticipation and dread. Even better the story evolves from these inevitable moments and takes the story & relationship to a surprising resolution.
