Saw this for a third time and still love this film. I love the deep ambivalence about the central relationship. It's easy to see Simmons as the bad guy, but you also have to admit that his motives are exactly what he says they are.
It's easy to see Teller as a victim, but you also have to admit that his ambition drives him to extremes even without Simmons driving him. He gives up his soul when he casts aside that girl so cruelly.
The climax of this film is one of the most pyrrhic victories you can imagine ... at last these two monsters are in sync and actual greatness is achieved. Observe Paul Reiser's amazing expression in his last shot on camera when he realizes his son has just left him.
