Review of Whiplash (2014) by Thomas Q — 29 May 2015
'Whiplash' is a tightly edited, scripted, and acted affair about a jazz drummer who must face the overwhelming pressures of living up to the expectations of a demanding, to say the least, music teacher (Simmons) who is best described as the Bobby Knight of jazz conductors.
Compelling and myopic, 'Whiplash' has a great undertow--once you understand it is more than a ham-fisted diatribe against a despotic personality. If you love jazz and/or tense drama, this film should not be overlooked.
