Review of While We're Young (2015) by Harrison W — 05 Apr 2015
This feels a bit more like what I would imagine to be a typical Ben Stiller movie than Noah Baumbach's other movies. It never has that "punch in the gut"/"Protagonist exposed as a fraud" feeling that I got from Greenberg/Squid in the Whale, and I think part of that is Baumbach maturing as a writer, but I think another part of that is Wes Anderson's influence.
Something about Adam Driver's character felt a little bit odd tonally, and at some point, it hit me that he's basically playing Jason Schwartzman roles from any of Anderson's movies. The constant overlapping dialogue shows authenticity, but it sure does get annoying quickly, and I never felt like it added anything to the film.
