Review of While We're Young (2015) by Phillip D — 22 Aug 2015
It's really hard not to like While We're Young. The quiet mockery of today's casual liberal, hipster fashion culture is undeniably accurate and the honest look at a couple caught in between is insightful.
That being said, While We're Young has less to say and more to show. While I certainly enjoyed watching a culture deconstruction, the whole movie ends up relying on that and the result is relatively boring and predictable.
It's one thing to watch thirty minutes of Stiller and Watts struggling with their identity but triple that just gets monotonous. I might even go so far as to say that in the process of deconstructing today's culture, Baumbach ends up playing right into it, with an idealistic, white-washed, culture appropriating cast of characters who happen to be documentary film-makers with no children, a result that in many ways, cancels itself out, despite all of the charm that Stiller and Watts bring to the table.
