Review of While She Was Out (2008) by Azade C — 13 Jan 2009
While She Was Out is a standard suspense film where the "hero" is being chased and has to survive an ordeal. In this case our hero is actually a heroine, Della (Kim Basinger). Some of the dialogue in this movie is a bit cheesy, and quite a bit of it seems over-dramatic, especially the monologues by Chuckie (Lukas Haas) when he was trying to lure Della out of hiding. This is also one of those movies where you find yourself yelling at the female lead, wondering why she keeps making poor choices. What saved the movie was the better than expected acting and the fact that the basic premise of the story is a believable one. You can't walk up to someone and mouth off to them just because you're having a bad day, or in the case of this movie, walk up to their car and leave a snotty note. You never know what's going through that other persons' head. They just might snap and try to kill you! One thing that surprised me was the resourcefulness of Della's character, even in her dazed desperation. Keep an eye out for her magic red box while you watch this. She's constantly pulling something timely and useful out of it.
This definitely isn't the best movie I've seen in a while, but it's still entertaining. Don't be surprised if you see this airing on a Sunday afternoon on USA or TBS sometime soon.
