Bill Murray is the original big creen Hunter S Thompson. I think he does a better actual portrayal than Depp, but in Fear & Lothing it IS a drug induced bender later on in Thompson's life so I'm sure that they're both REALLY close.
However, Bill doesn't have all the special effects Depp does.
